Parents who want to put their children into Nixa’s magnet elementary school have the chance beginning Feb. 4.
The enrollment lottery for the John Thomas School of Discover begins Feb. 4, and ends Feb. 19. The John Thomas School of Discovery uses a curriculum rooted in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
Parents or guardians who wish to have their child(ren) attend John Thomas School of Discovery will need to complete the online JTSD family registration enrollment request form (found here: http://www.nixapublicschools.net/jtsdlottery). Students will be selected from this enrollment pool and put on a waiting list.
Open spots from the waiting list are filled in the order that students are placed on the waiting list, and they are filled on a one-by-one basis.
The John Thomas School of Discovery lottery is open to kindergarten and first grade students.
JTSD was the first STEM accredited school in the state and has paved the path for STEM-based instruction in the elementary classroom. Research and professional development on inquiry, problem-based learning, and effective science instruction has allowed the JTSD team to create a unique and custom STEM-driven curriculum rooted in best-practices and free of any kits or purchased programs. Students regularly engage in problem-based experiences through the lens of science affecting the school and local community.
The team of teachers at JTSD has consistently produced top scores in the state with standardized testing while serving a student population that is fully lottery-based and not unique from other buildings and districts.
Nixa’s John Thomas School of Discovery was one of three recipients of the STEM School of Excellence Award during the Oct. 10 Awards Session at the International STEM Education Association’s STEM Expo in 2017.
