Reverend Winfred L. Rains passed away Feb. 4, 2014, at the age of 99. He lived in Republic, Missouri prior to moving to Jacksonville.

Winfred was born Nov. 29, 1914, in Sumner County, Kansas. He was the son of Leslie and Jennie Templeton Rains. In 1938 he was united in marriage to Thelma Louise Williams of Swifton, Arkansas. Mrs. Rains preceded him in death on May 28, 1991. He was also preceded in death by his parents; his only son, LaVon Rains; his daughter, LaVera Haley; two brothers, Vern Rains and Kenny Rains; four sisters, Nadine Shoffner, Leota Slape, Janice Moore, Thelma Gardner and several brothers-in-law.

Winfred is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Carol and David Pieske of Jacksonville, MO; one sister, Mrs. Maxine White of Hurst, Texas, grandchildren; Kristy Hopper (Chris) of Moberly, Darla Wilt (Curt) of Mexico, MO; Lisa Bainter (Todd) of Lander, Wyoming, Jon Haley (Sandy) of Jane, MO, Cindy Paladino (Michael) of Rogers, Arkansas, Valerie Griggs (William) of Springfield, MO, Michael Rains of Republic, MO, DeVonna Rains of Springfield, MO, Kelly Green (Jim) of Mt. Vernon, MO, Kyler Rains (Kimberly) of Carthage, North Carolina, Stefani Rains of Springfield, MO, and 13 great-grandchildren.

Winfred Rains graduated from high school in Caldwell, Kansas in 1934, and then received a degree from Southwestern Bible School in Enid, Oklahoma. Winfred sang bass with the Southwestern Trio/Quartet that was pictured in “Like a Prairie Fire” by Bob Burke. Reverend Rains was an ordained minister with the Assemblies of God in Arkansas and Missouri for more than 60 years. He pastored thirteen churches and served as Presbyter for many years. He built, finished, or remodeled churches in almost every town in which he pastored, plus he built at least one parsonage. He was a devoted husband and father, as well as mentor to many beginning pastors. He loved to fish, hunt, and grow a vegetable garden each year. He also worked tirelessly at church related youth camps during the summer months. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A funeral service for Winfred will be held Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014 at 1 p.m. at Pathway Memorial Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until time of service with interment in Evergreen Cemetery on Monday, Feb. 10, 2014, at 2 p.m. in Republic.
