Chaplain Thomas “Elgin” Last, 91, of Mt. Vernon, died April 25, 2016, at the Lawrence County Manor in Mt. Vernon. He was born Nov. 19, 1924, in Ontario, Canada, the son of the late Thomas and Ada (Daniels) Last.

Elgin was a graduate of Windsor Ontario Canada High School. After graduation, he attended

Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, Illinois, Gordon College in Boston, Massachusetts, and received his Bachelor’s degree from Taylor University in Upland, Indiana, and his Master’s degree from Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois. He was a chaplain for the Missouri Rehabilitation Center in Mt. Vernon for 39 years, retiring in 1990.

Elgin was a 25-year member of the Mt. Vernon Rotary Club and a member of the First Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon.

On December 1, 1950, he married Barbara Steckley, in Stouffille Ontario, Canada.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Barbara, of the home; one daughter, Patricia Cleek and her husband Ron of Nixa; one son, John Last and his wife Caroline of Springfield; three grandchildren, J.J. and Dustin Cleek and Kate Kumar; one great-granddaughter, Emma Cleek; and several nieces and nephews.

His brothers, Calvin and Bruce Last; and sister, Elva Pastorius, preceded him in death.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Fossett-Mosher Funeral Home. Memorial donations may be made to Shriner’s Hospital or the Endowment Mission Fund for the First Baptist Church, in care of the funeral home.
