Freshman Patterson picks up his fourth straight pin as Ozark wallops Waynesville

Posted

Ozark freshman Teagon Patterson seemed destined to be a wrestler. After all, that's where his name comes from.

"My brother picked the name out for me," Teagon said, referring to former Tigers wrestler Trenton Patterson. "There was a wrestler named Teague who wrestled for Mizzou and my brother looked up to him."

A few weeks into the start of his high school career and Teagon has yet to taste defeat. The 113-pound freshman helped kick off what would be a 72-6 Ozark victory versus Waynesville on Tuesday.

Patterson recorded a pin against Mason Zamora in 1:39.

"I wrestled sloppy at the beginning," he said. "I threw (a cradle) and it worked out for me. We’ve been working in practice on that all the time."

Patterson improved to 4-0, with all four wins being pins.

"It’s been confidence-boosting," he said of the start to his Ozark career. "I’ve been thinking about wrestling on this mat for a long time."

Coach Tod Sundlie opted not to have Patterson make the trip to Iowa last month for the Dan Gable Donnybrook Tournament to keep the freshman from feeling overwhelmed.

"I was a little disappointed, but I understood it," Patterson said. "We talked about it a little bit. I’m a freshman and he didn’t think it would have been healthy for me.

Instead, Patterson competed on the jayvee level at the McDonald County Tournament and won all four of his matches.

"I had to get the nerves out," he said. "Jayvee or not, I was kind of stressed out."

Patterson credits practice partner, 120-pounder Damien Moseley, for how well he is transitioning to varsity action.

"With his pace and how fast he works, that’s been very helpful for me," Patterson said.

Also winning by fall for Ozark were Keaton Hurst (126), Caden Harrington (132), Braxton Strick (157), Brock Sundlie (165), Lucas Campbell (175) and Johnny Williams (195).

In girls action, Ozark lost to Waynesville 45-30.

Ozark's Sarah Cazier improved to 8-2 with a pin in 3:20 at 170.
