Ozark's Beets, Nixa's Carter, Hopkins and Cantwell claim Sectional gold medals

SPRINGFIELD — Nixa’s Gideon Carter, Afton Hopkins and Jackson Cantwell, along with Ozark’s Abby Beets, all captured first-place  finishes in Class 5 Sectional 3 action Saturday.

Carter posted a school-record time in the 300 hurdles of 39.69. His previous PR was 39.90 at the Central Ozark Conference Meet. He  shaved nearly a full second off his 40.53 time from Districts. 

Hopkins cleared the 14-0 mark in the pole vault for the second straight meet on his way to a winning vault of 14-41/2.

Jackson Cantwell won both the discus (180-101/2) and shot put (63-5).

Beets won the pole vault by more than five inches by clearing 10-10. She has finished first in her last three meets.

Altogether, Nixa qualified for State in 11 events, while Ozark made State in seven events.

Runner-up finishes included Ozark’s Peyton Ligion in the high jump (6-51/2) and Nixa’s Aason Ashley in the 3,200 (9:39) and Faith Chepkondol in the long jump (18-3).

Ashley’s time is a school record.

Ligion had cleared 6-43/4 at the COC Meet and 6-33/4 at Districts.

Taking third were Ozark’s Mamady Emboli in the 110 hurdles (15.38) and Bria Wright in the 300 hurdles (46.9) and Nixa’s Hayden Mays in the discus (161-101/4).

Fourth-place finishes were Nixa’s Spencer Ward in the 400 (50.45), Nixa girls’ 4 x 200 relay (1:45.43), Rylee Eng in the triple jump (37-51/4) and Ava Owens in the discus (113-61/4), Ozark boys 4 x 200 relay (1:29.15), Ozark girls’ 4 x 400 relay (4:06) and Mallory Beets in the pole vault (10-13/4).
