Host Trojans, Chadwick among seven winning teams in Sparta Tournament eight-team field

Sparta has put together a field for its Sparta Tournament this week that nearly includes nothing but teams with winning records.

The Sparta Tournament tips off on Tuesday with the host Trojans (8-6) among an incredible seven winning teams in the eight-team field.

First-round matchups Tuesday include No. 8 seed New Covenant against No. 1 Ava (15-1) at 4 p.m., No. 5 Sparta versus No. 4 Gainesville (11-5) at 5:30 p.m., No. 7 Chadwick (10-3) opposite No. 2 Greenwood (13-6) at 7 p.m. and No. 6 Fair Grove (9-7) against No. 3 Mansfield (11-7) at 8:30 p.m..

New Covenant, with former Sparta coach Ryan Worley, is the lone team without a winning record.

“The tournament is loaded, it’s a nightmare for coaches and a fun one for spectators,” Sparta coach Derec Link said. “Any team in the tournament can win three games or lose three.”

“It’s going to be tough, you’ve got to work.” Trojans center Jacob Lafferty added.

The tourney will continue with semifinals Thursday, consolation semifinals Friday and the finals are Saturday.
