Headliner News Obituary Policy

We have a duty to inform our readers of what’s happening in our community, including the deaths of persons in our community. That’s why we will continue to publish death notices at no cost. These death notices give the name of the deceased person, their birth date and death date plus important information about their memorial services so that friends and loved ones may make plans to attend.
In February 2019, the Christian County Headliner News aligned with the other southwest Missouri newspapers in its ownership group and established a policy to offset the cost of print and the time it takes staff members to prepare the obituaries for publication.
If a family wishes to run more information than the free death notice offers, the Headliner News will run full obituaries at a cost of 35 cents per word plus an additional $10 for the inclusion of a photograph. Generally, this equates to about $50 for the average obituary. The Headliner News bills funeral homes for the cost of obituary publication, except in cases where the deceased’s survivors prefer to pursue obituary publication independently. We do our very best to keep these costs reasonable and fair.
Obituaries for veterans of all five branches of the United States military will also be published at no cost. Additionally, there may be special cases in which the Headliner News may waive the cost of printing an obituary.
