Christian County sees uptick in COVID vaccinations

Posted

Data from the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services shows that 777 Christian County residents received a vaccine dose against the COVID-19 virus in the first seven days of October, which is seven times the averages of 111 doses per day for Christian County.

A total of 39,906 people in Christian County's population of 88,616 have initiated the vaccination process since vaccines became available in 2020. A total of 41.1 percent of the population has completed a two-dose vaccine cycle. Another 3,485 persons have received one dose and are in the middle of a vaccination cycle, awaiting their second doses of vaccine manufactured by Moderna or Pfizer.

Christian County is part of Region D, the southwesternmost of the Missouri's nine regions used to allocate resources to combat the spread of COVID-19. Region D received about 13 percent of Missouri's allocated 4.59 million COVID vaccine doses, or 583,110 doses. Region D has about 15 percent of the state's population of 6.14 million people.

Missourians who received the Pfizer vaccine can receive a booster shot at least six months after their initial series based on CDC guidance:

-people 65 years and older and residents in long-term care settings should receive a booster;

-people aged 50–64 years with underlying medical conditions should receive a booster;

-people aged 18–49 years with underlying medical conditions may receive a booster; and

-people aged 18-64 years who are at increased risk for COVID-19 exposure and transmission because of occupational or institutional setting (example: frontline medical workers, teachers, and first responders) may receive a booster.

The list of medical conditions categorized as high-risk by the CDC is available at https://www.cdc.gov/.../people-with-medical-conditions.html. Missourians with an underlying medical condition are encouraged to speak with their healthcare provider about whether a booster shot is right for them.

Federal health experts are still reviewing data from Moderna and Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) and will decide when recipients may be eligible for a booster shot.

Currently, the Christian County Health Department only offers Moderna vaccine, so persons seeking a Pfizer booster shot are encouraged to contact their healthcare provider, or contact a Christian County provider that offers Pfizer vaccines, and schedule an appointment.

If you have questions or concerns about vaccines, the best course of action is to discuss those concerns with your healthcare provider.
