Full-court press triggers offensive explosion for Spokane in first-round rout

Posted

Spokane may have found a weapon in its full-court press during the Owls’ 80-50 first-round blowout of Bradleyville at the Spokane Tournament on Tuesday.

The quickness of Owls guards Ricky Riott, Jace Leigh and Luke Wasson stood out, as Spokane flustered Bradleyville’s ball-handers with full-court pressure in the early going.

The No. 2-seeded Owls put up 32 points in the first quarter alone. Riott had nine points in the first eight minutes.

Riott finished with 17 points, while center JD Tate topped Spokane with 19 points and Leigh added 16.

The 80 points is a season-high for Spokane by plenty. The Owls’ single-game high had been been 71 points last week versus Miller.

Spokane’s magic number appears to be 49. The Owls (7-10) are 5-1 when scoring 49 points or more.

Spokane advances to meet No. 6 seed Blue Eye at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The Bulldogs (12-5) downed No. 3 seed Cassville 45-34 Tuesday. Last month, Blue Eye lost to Cassville 59-42.

In the other semifinal Friday, top-seeded Ash Grove will meet No. 4 seed Reeds Spring at 6 p.m.
