Math problems for Honor Flight

Posted

Spokane Middle School math instructor Michael Lewis and his students held an "equation boot camp" as a fundraiser for Honor Flight of the Ozarks.

Over the course of the fundraising event, Dr. Lewis' seventh and eighth grade students solved more than 8,800 math equations. Seventh graders improved their problem solving skills by an average of 2.73 grade levels, while eighth graders gained an average of 3.13 levels. Lewis reported that 22 students rose out of the "boot camp" to reach the rank of "lieutenant" or better on the special scale he devised to track student improvement from the previous year.

As a group, they raised $1,361.50 for Honor Flight of the Ozarks, an organization that takes veterans on one-day trips to Washington, D.C. to tour war memorials and other important sites related to American military service.
