Ozark seniors earn National Merit Scholarships

Posted

Ozark High School senior Vadim Grishchuk was selected as a semifinalist in the 2021 National Merit Scholarship Program, while fellow senior Calla Yearta-Southern was named a commended scholar.

The approximately 16,000 students in the United States who earned the semifinalist recognition entered the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2020 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which served as an initial screen of program entrants.

The nationwide pool of semifinalists, representing less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. The top 3-4 percent of scorers are named "commended scholars."

“Vadim and Calla are exceptional students who seek out opportunities for learning at a high level,” said Ozark Director of Academies Leigh Jennings. “Vadim has excelled academically and also participates in the GOCAPS Engineering and Manufacturing program. Calla has won numerous awards with the Ozark DECA chapter, in addition to demonstrating high academic achievement. Being recognized by the National Merit Scholarship is a great accomplishment and we are so proud of Vadim and Calla."

To become a finalist, a student must submit a detailed scholarship application, have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn SAT scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test.

About 95 percent of semifinalists are expected to complete the process and advance to the finalist level, which will be announced in February.
