Christian County Commission renews burn ban

Published 5:00 am Wednesday, October 28, 2026

The Christian County Commission (CCC) renewed a burn ban for the county during their meeting on Thursday, Oct. 22. The ban will be in effect for 30 days, unless the CCC lifts the ban before that time.

In the ordinance authorizing the ban, the commission stated that the ban is in place due to the state fire marshal determining it was appropriate for the county, and the U.S. Drought Monitor determined Christian County “as being an area of severe, extreme, or exceptional drought.”

According to the ordinance found on the commission’s website, the ban prohibits outdoor burning in general, including the burning of trash, brush, or agricultural burning. Exceptions can be made for those who get a permit from their area fire chief. The ban doesn’t apply to the “to grilling or cooking food using charcoal, wood, propane or natural gas in cooking or grilling appliances,” generating heat in a place used to shelter people or animals, or the use of “propane, acetylene, natural gas, gasoline or kerosene in a device intended for heating, construction or maintenance activities.”

Violating the ordinance is a Class Misdemeanor and can result in a year in jail and/or a $2,000 fine.
