Hammons Products has extended Black Walnut season until the end of November.

In a recent press release, Jacob Basecke, president/COO of Hammons Product Co., said that recent weather, including above average temperatures and lack of rainfall, had slowed the harvest as black walnuts have stayed on trees instead of falling to the ground in October. With the walnuts now falling, the company has extended its timeline for purchasing the crop.

“The company announced that its network of hullers will continue buying well into November, with most going through Monday, Nov. 30,” Basecke. “Plus, the buying price has increased to $16 per 100 pounds (after hulling) to individuals or groups who bring their freshly fallen Black Walnuts to one of about 170 hulling sites in 12 states. There is no minimum amount – hullers will take nuts in one bucket, three sacks, or a trailer load.”

Basecke encouraged those harvesting walnuts to bring them to a huller within two days of picking them up.

“This helps ensure the nuts weigh the most with better quality,” he said.

In Christian County, one of the nearest hulling stations is managed by Clint Harwell and is located at 4749 South Farm Road 223 in Rogersville. Another is managed by David Christenson and is located at 101 W. Main Street in Hurley.

It takes between 2,000 to 3,000 hulled walnuts to equal 100 pounds.
