Averi Leyland’s two-run double and Natalie Wilks’ five-hit pitching powered Sparta to a 3-1 victory versus Skyline in the Sparta Classic championship game Saturday.
Leyland delivered a two-out double in the first inning to score Mya Fulton and Megan Brown. Fulton had singled to start the game and Brown walked.
Leyland’s double was the Lady Trojans’ final hit on the night.
Leyland lifted her batting average to .451, with nine extra-base hits and 18 RBIs.
Sparta scored in the seventh on a Skyline error.
Skyline pitcher Makenna Shockley struck out 10 and walked seven.
Wilks shut out the Lady Tigers over the first four innings. She fanned eight.
Wilks upped her record to 10-3. She has 116 strikeouts and 11 walks in 70 innings.
In the semifinal round, Sparta downed Strafford 4-1 Friday.
Megan Brown homered and Madeline Brown had two hits and drove in two runs.
Wilks fired a two-hitter.
