'Tis the season for giving

Posted

"We've had a lot more people call to volunteer this season," Evans said. "The community has responded to our need. Parents have called wanting their children to help."

The Salvation Army's goal in Ozark is to raise $5,000 in donations.

"Last year, because of the weather, we only raised $2,200," Evans said. "This is the only fund-raiser for the year; this is our budget. The money stays in our area-when you put money in an Ozark kettle, it stays here. We use it for people who fall through the cracks. It's for emergency needs, like gas or sick children. Last year, when it was so cold, an elderly lady's furnace went out and we brought her some heaters until it was fixed."

Volunteers are stationed at Wal-Mart from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.

There are still openings on the bell-ringing calendar, Evans said. For more information, call (417) 581-7511.

Groups and organizations volunteering for the Salvation Army this season are Cassidy Methodist Church; Ozark Brownies; Ozark 4-H Club; Hopedale Baptist Church; Sparta First Baptist Church; Ozark Christian Church; Selmore Christian Church; Ozark Literary Club; Ozark Nazarene Church; Ozark VFW; Ozark Tops Club; Ozark High School High Life Club; Ozark Kiwanis Club; Julie Anderson's fifth-grade class; Chadwick schools; St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church; and Spokane High School.
