An Ozark man will spend 15 years in federal prison for downloading and sharing child porn.

On Jan. 24, Sean O’Brien, 44, was sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for the receipt and distribution of child pornography. U.S. District Judge Douglas Harpool signed an order committing O’Brien to federal prison for a term of 188 months. Harpool also recommended that O’Brien be committed to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons sex offender treatment program.

On Nov. 22, 2017, the Southwest Missouri Cyber Crimes Task Force began an online undercover investigation of persons suspected of sharing child pornography on a peer-to-peer file sharing protocol called Gnutella2. An officer identified an IP address sharing files “previously identified as containing depictions of child pornography.”

In the span of 35 minutes, an undercover officer downloaded 13 files directly from the IP address. According to the probable cause statement, “several of the files contained images that depicted prepubescent children engaged in sexual contact with adults,” which constituted child pornography under federal law.

Police served a subpoena to Suddenlink Communications, which indicated to police that the IP address in question had been issued to a user on North 24th Street in Ozark. The same address was registered to O’Brien on the Missouri State Highway Patrol Sex Offender Registry.

On Feb. 1, 2018, police executed a search warrant on O’Brien’s home. While one officer interviewed O’Brien, another “located over 50 images of prepubescent children engaged in sexual conduct” on a laptop computer found in O’Brien’s bedroom.

O’Brien’s sentence was eight months above the minimum he could receive because of a prior conviction for sexually abusing a child in Texas in 2010.
