Some of us will be spending some time this week hunting for things we didn't find that were not tied down. And just think of all the trees that have blown down on fences. Hopefully, we find them before our traveling cattle.

Ernest Albert Bilyeu, 87, passed away on Thursday, Dec.18, 2025, after a short illness. Ernest was born on Sept.14, 1938, in the hills of the Ozark Mountains. He was the second in line of six children born to Elmer and Pearl (House) Bilyeu, near the end of “The Great Depression”. Thus, he was a child of humble beginnings. His younger years were spent living on Pine Ridge, a wooded area just south of Chadwick, Mo. He graduated from Chadwick High School in 1957, where he was a member of the basketball team.

We won't need to write or type 2025 many more times. Has anyone noticed how quickly 2025 has gone? And, where did last week go? All my plans didn't get finished.

It’s going to seem strange to go to the Oldfield Opry and not see Mona Decor sitting in her special seat in the back. I knew she was getting kind of frail, but it was a shock to hear she had passed away.

Hope that each of us has made a habit of carrying a heavy coat and a light jacket as we travel around. The Missouri weather sure can change quickly. I like the warm days best.

We are really in the winter months in more ways than one. It was hard to get warm after being outside Sunday morning. But, our cold spells don't usually last too long. Just hoping!

My, how quickly this month has gone by. It was so good seeing my friends from the past meetings at the meeting with Kaitlyn McConall last weekend at the Chadwick Community Building in her study of Chadwick’s history. There is no end to the history of our town. I am so glad that our school has adopted the Chadwick Flyer for many of the activities. This means that our young folks are interested in history.

There was a cold spell last weekend and Monday that brought out a lot of frost flowers along the roadways. As I looked out my window, it looked like someone had thrown something out, and it hung in the fences. A closer look proved to be lots of frost flowers. They always look so pretty.

Among other things that made me happy this week were that Randy and Brandy got my garage door repaired, and Steven and Emmily Greene got my hay delivered that I bought back in August. That has lessened my stress level a lot. The hot dry spell made pastures go away, and made livestock very restless

At the time this article was being written, the shutdown of the U.S. Government caused by Congress’s failure to pass a funding bill for the Fiscal Year 2026 remained in effect, and the Nov. 1 deadline for SNAP benefits to lapse due to a lack of funding had passed. While it was reported that two federal judges had ordered the Trump administration to use emergency funds to continue to fund SNAP, it was not immediately clear if and when that would happen.

There was a call from my sister, Hester, last week to invite me, along with other members of her family, to a gathering at the Springfield Airport to welcome home the Honor Flight from Washington, D.C. one night last week. Her husband, Mac, was to be one of the flight members (I was unable to go). Reports are that it was a great trip and a great evening. Mac's daughter, Cindy, had gone with him on the trip. It was a trip to be remembered by everyone who was involved. Mac had some medical issues not so very long ago and was pretty tired from such a big day. Hopefully, they got a recording of (the entire) event. Mac had served in the Vietnam War. Herter's twin granddaughters loved hearing his stories. They are at the right age to write some stories

In 2024, there were 194 Missouri traffic crashes involving farm equipment/implements. In those crashes, two people were killed and 65 were injured. Missouri has entered the fall harvest season and it’s important that drivers and farmers pay attention and share the road. Farmers and motorists are likely to encounter each other on any roadway, at any time of the day or night. Whether you are driving a vehicle or operating farm machinery, these crashes can be prevented by paying attention to the full-time job of driving and obeying all traffic laws.
