Christian County has a new nonprofit, Christian County Cares. Our goal is to help our neighbors with currently unsupported emergency needs. We are also working with established nonprofits to help increase the impact, with the goal of maintaining shelters, utilities, and meeting basic needs.

Nixa High School sophomore Jasmyn Piwko has won the 2025 Congressional Art Competition. Her drawing "Vintage Visit" will hang in the Capitol in Washington, D.C. for the next year. Nixa Journalism students competed at the national level and learned about journalism from a variety of journalism experts during the JEA/NSPA National High School Journalism Convention in Seattle last week. In addition to participating in specialized learning sessions, they earned several accolades during the event.

A former Nixa High School student was one of 35 “high-achieving” MU students who presented research projects at the Missouri State Capitol on Undergraduate Research Day on Thursday, March 13. Preston Carroll, now a senior at the Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla, presented his research of the 555 Timer at the event. He said his work was designed to help other students who use the device better understand what it does.

An EF-0 tornado struck Nixa on Tuesday, April 29. According to information from the National Weather Service, the tornado was 25 yards wide and landed at 9:30 a.m. It traveled about 4.4 miles before lifting at 9:34 a.m. Additionally, wind gusts of 87 miles per hour swept through the city.

The Nixa Theatre Department competed in the Reader's Theatre state competition on Thursday, April 24, at Marshfield High School. The Reader's Theatre cast took second place. The Reader's Theatre Cast includes: McKenzie McConville, Deacon Brown, Judah Anderson, AnnaLynn Keese, Emerson Burk, Harrison Carter, Ashlynn Reed, Aiden Hopkins, Greta Finley, Skylar Pannell, Arthur Loden, Lola Quigg, Olivia Carlin, Elly Molacek, and Lilli Robison.

Dr. Allison Fleetwood was presented the Missouri Outstanding Theatre Educator of the Year Award on Thursday, April 24, by the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) and the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS). The award was presented at the MSHSAA Theatre State Championships at Marshfield High School.

The Nixa Fire Protection District (NFPD) held an open house at their Fire Training Center on Wednesday, April 16. The open house was a chance for members of the public to tour the training center, which was formerly the NFPD’s Fire Station One. Visitors were treated to breakfast and shown around the building.

Nixa Parks and Recreation held their annual Easter Egg Hunt at McCauley Park on Friday, April 18. An estimated 500 children attended the event to get a share of about 22,000 candy-filled eggs. Other attractions included face painting, inflatable buildings, food trucks and a visit from the Easter Bunny.

The Nixa Drone Team 2319 X, consisting of Dalton Jones, Andrew Durbin, and Faith Helterbrand, took first place at the 2025 All-Service JROTC Drone National Championships on Friday, April 4 and Saturday, April 5. The tournament, which included 83 drone teams from around the United States, included teams from Hawaii and Samoa. After 160 grueling qualifying rounds, Team 2319 X, as well as Nixa's two other teams, placed high enough in the seeding to advance to the single-elimination rounds. However, only 50 percent of the teams advanced.

Christian County voters approved Ambulance District Property Tax Relief, a ballot measure that the Christian County Ambulance District put forth on the ballot for the election held on Tuesday, April 8. During the election, 2,770 people, or 52.29 percent of the voters, cast “Yes” votes for the proposition, while 2,527 people, or 47.71 percent of those who voted, cast “No” votes.

Congratulations to the EagleAir staff for being recognized in NBCU Academy's nationwide student broadcast news contest. Freshmen Alexander Eggleston, Scarlett Mahy, and Dusty Stewart won a 6th Place Finalist award for Outstanding Video News Report from the NBCU Academy contest called The Edit. The contest required students to create a video news package centered around the subject of "wellness," using the Adobe Express video editing app. Their news package focused on how students can balance screen time with overall health. The Edit Spring 2025 contest received submissions from schools across the United States, with registrations from over 600 teachers representing more than 23,000 students.
