Nixa Public Schools held their Back to School Bash at the APEX Center on Saturday, Aug. 1. The event, which was attended by an estimated 1,000 children and their families, provided the kids with items they will need for the upcoming school year, including backpacks, hygiene items, school supplies, shoes, clothing items, and more. About 120 volunteers helped distribute the items.
Tricia Chapman, sponsorship coordinator at Nixa Public Schools, said the event existed as a “partnership” between the district and the Nixa community.
“They're getting the basic classroom supplies,” she said. “They're getting backpacks, shoes, headphones, (and) dental hygiene items. Care to Learn also provides hygiene items like shampoo, soap.
“We have immunizations. We have sports physicals. We had certificates for free haircuts. We had local nonprofits in the area … set up here so that they (and the families) could get … paired together, so that they could have those services throughout the year. We also had fresh produce and some non-perishable items. So as they were exiting the event, they were able to load up their cars to take on with them as well.”
