Clever offense receives a boost with the addition of Glendale transfer Deters

Posted

Carrying over from last year, Clever’s quarterback situation has remained wildly unpredictable.

The Jays have welcomed aboard Rex Deters as a transfer from Glendale. The 5-foot-9, 175-pound senior has been working out with the Jays this month, after he and his family moved from Battlefield to Clever.

Deters was primarily a wide receiver for Glendale, but also took reps at quarterback. He received All-Ozark Conference honorable mention recognition each of the past two seasons. He had 675 receiving yards as a sophomore two years ago.

Deters has made a favorable impression on Clever coach Willie Howard.

“He is a very knowledgeable football player, and he really understands spread offenses,” Howard said. “He is a very strong leader, which has been a bright spot as well.”

Lane Mendenhall emerged as pleasant surprise at quarterback for Clever last season. Despite no experience behind center and not starting at QB until Week Five, he went on to complete 75-of-140 passes for 958 yards and six touchdowns, with five interceptions.

Mendenhall became a signal-caller after Gage Evans broke a collarbone in Week One. Brayden Baker also saw time at QB.

Mendenhall graduated, but Evans and Baker are back with the Jays.

Whether Deters or Evans is at QB, the other will join Xavier Robinson to strengthen Clever's receiving corps. Robinson had 55 catches for 696 yards last season.

Deters also plays baseball and stood out as a reliever for the Class 6 District 6 champion Falcons this past spring.
