Nixa, MO – Beginning Monday, June 1, adults who have developmental disabilities will have a new place to connect as Developmental Center of the Ozarks debuts expanded services in a program aptly named “DCO Connects”.
DCO Connects is thoughtfully designed to offer hands-on, community-based education and activities to support those seeking a more independent lifestyle. Individuals in this program will actively engage in their local community, building relationships and confidence while building pathways to long-term success. The program is certified by Missouri Department of Mental Health, Division of Developmental Disabilities and approved to serve up to 30 individuals.
“DCO Connects is really about the community becoming the classroom” explains DCO Executive Director Marisa DeClue. “Whether it’s accessing an exercise or art class, volunteering with the greater community, participating in regional networking activities – there is so much potential in how we can all promote that sense of belonging. We know that the most successful communities – those who report increased levels of joy – are those where belonging is fostered and encouraged. That’s what we want to see happen.”
DCO Connects will be located at 1824 North Highway CC in Nixa. While this is the “hub”, most of the day will be spent in the community. Program hours will be Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.
On June 1, the community is invited to participate in water activities in the Connects parking lot from noon until 2 p.m. A collaborative art project is also planned - be prepared to get a little messy! Hot dogs and beverages will also be available.
Community members are also invited to a ribbon cutting with the Nixa Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday, July 1, at 11:30 a.m. Twisted Classics food truck will be on site with items for purchase.
Funding for Connects is supported through community support from donors and contracts with the Missouri Department of Mental Health. Additional support for Community Inclusion has been made possible through relationships with CC Links.
