Lady Cardinals knock off last year's state runner-up to earn Class 1 Final Four berth

Posted

Chadwick is bound for its sixth Final Four trip, after edging Delta 56-54 Saturday in a Class 1 Quarterfinal at Van Buren.

The Lady Cardinals led by as much as 15 points, before holding off a late rally by Delta, last year’s state runner-up.

Chadwick (24-5) is part of a Final Four field that also includes Meadville (29-0), Leeton (26-3) and Platte Valley (28-2).

The Lady Cardinals are matched up against two-time defending state champion Platte Valley in a semifinal at 4 p.m. Thursday at Missouri State’s Great Southern Bank Arena.

Platte Valley is referred by the Missouri State High Schools Activities Association as Jefferson/South Nodaway. When Jefferson/South Nodaway became a co-op in the 2016-17 school year, their school officials voted for the school to be referred to as Platte Valley in all sports but basketball.

However, most references to the school, even for basketball, are Platte Valley.

In the final Missouri High School Basketball Coaches Poll, Meadville was ranked No. 1, Platte Valley No. 4 and Leeton No. 6. Chadwick was among the teams receiving votes.

None of the Final Four teams faced each other in regular-season play.

Meadville is coached by former Clever superintendent Steve Carvajal.

Chadwick also picked up a 46-40 Sectional win against Greenfield last week.

The Lady Cardinals own five wins against teams that reached 20 wins the season. They also beat Fordland, Walnut Grove and Aurora

Overall, Chadwick is 5-5 against teams with 20 wins or more.
