Bria Wright responded to Districts like a champ, in fact like a two-time champion. The Ozark sophomore swept the Class 5 District 6 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles.
“I like the pressure,” Wright said of competing in the post-season.
She turned in a PR of 15.03 while winning the 100 hurdles by more than six-tenths of a second. She followed up by posting a PR of 46.73 while wining the 300 hurdles by more than a full second.
Wright was pleased with her start in the 100 hurdles. She bolted out of the blocks and already held a lead by the first hurdle.
“I came out quicker than usual,” she said. “I’m usually okay out of the blocks. I've been working on that in practice the last couple of days. I think I pushed out better this time.”
From there, Wright was seemingly light on her feet and didn’t even graze a hurdle.
“Once you have a good first hurdle, the whole thing comes together,” she said. “When you hit the first hurdles, it's kind of a mess. I was happy with how it turned out. I think it was my best race.”
Wright's previous 100 hurdles PR was 15.34. She’s motivated to break Ozark’s school record of 14.97 that has stood since 2001.
“As I get stronger, and by my senior year, I think I'll get it,” she said.
Eyeing Sectionals, Wright is looking forward to again racing with Willard’s Madison Davis, who posted a 14.99 in the 100 hurdles at the COC Championships and had a 46.53 in the 300 hurdles in Districts at Cedar Hill on Saturday.
“Racing with her, I'm getting better," Wright said. “In the 100 and 300, I'm chasing her. The more I race with her, the better I'll get.”
