Jackson Cantwell and the rest of the Class 5 District 6 and Class 4 District 6 shot put entrants won’t quite be front and center Saturday, but will be showcased like never before.
Nixa coach Lance Brumley has announced the shot put will be moved from the Eagles’ grass practice field to Eagles Stadium’s turf inside the track, or the track infield if you will.
Cantwell and company will throw the shot put near the 35-yard line and throw to the north.
"Anytime you have a state or national leader in an event it is worth showcasing that athlete,” Brumley said, referring to Cantwell, the defending Class 5 state shot put champion. "At almost every venue in the country, the throws are outside of the main track. We wanted to do something to showcase the throws and there is no way to throw javelin or discus on our infield, so it just made sense to do this with the shot put.”
Cantwell’s PR this season in the shot put is 72-3 3/4, which is a national record. He won a state championship last year with a throw of 64-3 3/4.
The Eagles also feature Hayden Mays, whose PR is 55-2 1/2. Cantwell and Mays were 1-2 in the shot put and discus at the COC Championships last week.
Nixa similarly featured the pole vault in 2018 for KC Lightfoot, of Lee's Summit. He was second-ranked nationally at the time. The Eagles borrowed a raised runway from Southwest Baptist and set it up in the infield.
Lightfoot is now the U.S. record-holder in the pole vault (19-11).
“That is kind of where the (shot put) idea came from,” Brumley said.
Nixa throw coaches Kelly Fields and Kenzie Medley built a portable shot ring to be used Saturday.
In addition to Nixa, Class 5 District 6 teams on hand will be Ozark, Branson, Carthage, Joplin, Kickapoo, Neosho, Parkview, Republic and Webb City.
Class 4 District 6 teams on hand will be Bolivar, Camdenton, Carl Junction, Hillcrest, Rogersville, Marshfield, McDonald County, Monett, Nevada and West Plains.
