A Nixa man was arrested on Saturday, Jan. 10 after he allegedly put a woman in a chokehold. Anthony James Altick, 38, is charged with first-degree domestic assault in relation to the incident.

Audiences flocked to the Aetos Center in Nixa for the Yuck Show on Sunday, Jan. 18, to enjoy a fun show that combined science with comedy. Brian Whittington, who hosted the show, invited several children from the audience to join him onstage, where they helped carry out experiments that demonstrated scientific principles while incorporating fun, hands-on activities, such as relay races, smoke rings, and mummy wrapping participants.

The Aetos Center will host two very different shows over two days next week. On Sunday, Jan. 18, Brian Whittington will present “The Yuck Show,” which he describes as “a big science party.” The next day, Monday, Jan. 19, Dr. Chad Rollins, of Republic, and the Guidance Expedition will debut “A Journey towards Hope and Positive Growth in Life.”

The Christian County 100 Club held Poker Night, their second largest fundraiser of the year, on Thursday, Jan. 8, at the Ozark Event Center. The purpose of the event was to raise money to support the families of first responders who lose their lives in the line of duty. About 50 people attended Poker Night, during which they enjoyed food and beverages while playing craps, poker, and roulette while trying to win a share of the $2,000 in prizes which were donated to the Christian County 100 Club. Marc Backes, owner of the Ozark Event Center, donated the space where the event was held.

I love being in the outdoors and enjoying all it has to offer me. I have spent many years doing that. Since I am retired, I spend most of my time indoors during the cold winter months. Unless I do go out to get firewood, fill the bird feeders, or go to church. The rest of the time, I warm myself by the fire and write stories.

Senior citizens are some of the most vulnerable members of society, and they can be at risk for various types of abuse, including sexual abuse, physical abuse, psychological abuse, neglect, and abandonment. However, during the Nixa Chamber of Commerce luncheon, held on Tuesday, Dec. 9. at North Point Church in Nixa, Lori Rook, a managing partner at Ozarks Elder Law, spoke of another common form of abuse seniors face – financial abuse.

The Nixa Police Department reported that a woman with an intellectual disability has gone missing from the facility where she lives. Deonna Jeanne Stevens, is a white female, age 60, height 5’5”, 200 lbs, with black hair, and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing glasses, a white shirt, blue jeans, and a green coat. Ms. Stevens has an unknown tattoo on her right arm.

Nixa High School has been recognized as a Model Professional Learning Community (PLC) at Work School. The school received this honor from Solution Tree for its sustained success in raising student achievement. Nixa High School is one of about 600 schools and districts in the United States and Canada to receive this honor, and the sixth school in Nixa to earn this achievement. Out of the 54 schools in Missouri that have received PLC honors, only eight of them are high schools. And, eight of those 54 schools are from Nixa (including two Nixa promising practicing schools).

Nixa Mayor Jared Giddens and Ozark Mayor Don Currence took part in the Salvation Army's Mayoral Bellringing Challenge on Thursday, Dec. 18, during which they each took a turn ringing a bell in front of Bass Pro Shops to collect donations for the Salvation Army. Besides Giddens and Currence, other mayors who took part in the challege were Caleb Smith, of Ash Grove; Eric Franklin, of Republic; and Ken McClure, former mayor of Springfield. All donations will go to benefit families in Greene and Christian County.
