An Ozark woman was booked into the Greene County Jail after she allegedly attempted to break into a Springfield Police vehicle and attacked the officer driving it. Dawn Marie Friend, 44, is charged with two felony counts of disarming a police officer and three misdemeanor counts of fourth-degree assault.

There is one thing we can expect as we enjoy living in Missouri; the weather can change in the drop of your hat. And just look at the crazy stuff that just happened all over the place. I do not enjoy this long spell of very cold and snowy weather. The animals don't much like it either. It looks like it is here to stay. It is not tennis shoe weather, and my coveralls are a bit thin.

While giving a talk at one of our local high schools, I could tell that a few of the kids really enjoyed hearing about all the opportunities to get out and enjoy our great outdoors. It was comforting to know that some had parents and grandparents who loved the outdoors and passed it on to them.

Norbert Roy Laengrich, age 88, of Ozark, Mo., passed away peacefully on Jan. 8, 2026, at his home. Norbert was born to Oscar Carl and Hazel Neda Laengrich on July 3, 1937, in Jones City, Okla. He was raised in Jones and later moved to Checotah, Okla., where he graduated from high school in 1956. Norbert married Mamie Lucille Tillery on Aug. 10, 1968, in Carlsbad, N.M. Norbert and Lucille shared many years of marriage until her death on Nov. 20, 2014. Norbert proudly served in the United States Army from Aug. 21, 1956, to July 31, 1962.

Just a reminder that there will be a Celebration of Life for Darlene Applegate at the Chadwick Community Building on Saturday, Jan. 24. Her ashes will be placed at the Joe Applegate Cemetery just off Highway H. Lunch will be available for friends and family at the community center. The family hopes to see many of Darlene's friends whom she grew up with in Chadwick with stories of her earlier days.

The justices of the Missouri Supreme Court denied an appeal by Craig Michael Wood, of Springfield, who is sentenced to death for the 2014 murder of 10-year-old Hailey Owens. In a ruling dated Tuesday, Jan. 13, the justices of the court voted unanimously voted to affirm ruling by an earlier court which denied a motion by Wood to vacate his death sentence.

Audiences flocked to the Aetos Center in Nixa for the Yuck Show on Sunday, Jan. 18, to enjoy a fun show that combined science with comedy. Brian Whittington, who hosted the show, invited several children from the audience to join him onstage, where they helped carry out experiments that demonstrated scientific principles while incorporating fun, hands-on activities, such as relay races, smoke rings, and mummy wrapping participants.

The Christian County 100 Club held Poker Night, their second largest fundraiser of the year, on Thursday, Jan. 8, at the Ozark Event Center. The purpose of the event was to raise money to support the families of first responders who lose their lives in the line of duty. About 50 people attended Poker Night, during which they enjoyed food and beverages while playing craps, poker, and roulette while trying to win a share of the $2,000 in prizes which were donated to the Christian County 100 Club. Marc Backes, owner of the Ozark Event Center, donated the space where the event was held.

A forest fire that burnt 700 acres of forest land in Christian County was fully contained by the U.S. Forest Service on Friday, Jan. 9, about a week after it was first reported on Saturday, Jan. 3. The blaze was located in the Swan Creek Non-motorized Area of the Mark Twain Forest, near Chadwick.
