Missouri voters were denied a fair choice in November 2024 when lawmakers slipped a ban on ranked choice and approval voting into a ballot measure. Amendment (Seven) was framed as a simple declaration that only U.S. citizens can vote, but at the end it quietly prohibited alternative voting systems. This hidden addition blocks communities from experimenting with fairer elections and raises serious legal concerns.

I love being in the outdoors and enjoying all it has to offer me. I have spent many years doing that. Since I am retired, I spend most of my time indoors during the cold winter months. Unless I do go out to get firewood, fill the bird feeders, or go to church. The rest of the time, I warm myself by the fire and write stories.

It is January and a typical cold morning as I get out of bed. The first thing I do is go and kneel down in front of our little wood stove, stir the hot coals, watch the orange glow, and add more firewood. The flames begin to dance, and I close the door.

Today, Dec. 31, is the last day of 2025, a fitting time to remember loved ones we have lost. Likewise, tomorrow is a time for starting anew while honoring, rather than dismissing, the loves of our past.

Christmas is over. It is a lot quieter. There is probably leftover food still in the refrigerator. The cleanup has begun or is done. Christmas lights and ornaments are, or will be, coming down and put away until next year, along with the artificial Christmas tree.

Some of us will be spending some time this week hunting for things we didn't find that were not tied down. And just think of all the trees that have blown down on fences. Hopefully, we find them before our traveling cattle.

We won't need to write or type 2025 many more times. Has anyone noticed how quickly 2025 has gone? And, where did last week go? All my plans didn't get finished.

Kris, a friend of mine who is also a fishing guide on local lakes, called me the other day and invited me to go crappie fishing with him. That was not unusual. We usually go together a couple of times every winter when his guiding business is slow.

For most hunters, this wonderful season of the majestic whitetail deer is over for another year. Bow hunters still have a little time left. If you are a deer hunter, or have been, you are probably like me and have a lot of deer memories.

Dec. 4, 2025, is National Celebrate Shelter Pets Day. It is a day dedicated to honoring animals waiting in shelters for loving families. The day brings warmth and hope, creating a moment for people to pause and see how special these friends can be. Not only do these animals find homes, but they also bring joy, comfort, and in many cases, help their new owners with mental health struggles such as PTSD and suicidal ideation.
