When you get older, you notice things or remember things you paid no attention to when you were younger. I was driving in the country a few weeks ago, away from the busy highways of today, and I began to notice something that I had never paid any attention to before.

The 68th Nixa Sucker Days festival opened with one of the events most beloved traditions, the Sucker Days Parade. Hundreds of festivalgoers lined the parade route to watch the procession, which included marching bands, vintage and modern cars, floats, and for younger parade-goers, lots of candy. Look for a photo gallery of the parade on the Christian County Headliner News website.

About four months after its soft opening in January and 14 months after ground was broken on the building in March of 2025, the staff of the Children’s Smile Center in Nixa celebrated the facility's grand opening on Monday, May 11, with a special ribbon cutting ceremony. About 200 people attended the ceremony, while a total of 400 people RSVP’d that they would visit to tour the facility.

It is Friday morning, and he is loading his fishing gear into his old V-bottom boat, which is already hooked to his truck. Then he loads his old canvas tent and other camping gear. It has seen many camping trips over the years. He puts it in his truck bed along with a cooler of food.

One person was injured during a shooting at Diversified Plastics, Inc. in Nixa on Friday, May 8, the Nixa Police Department (NPD) reported in a posting on their Facebook page. The NPD also reported that the alleged shooter was subdued by employees at Diversified Plastics and was taken into custody shortly after officers arrived on the scene.

A Springfield man who worked at a Nixa manufacturing plant is facing multiple charges after he allegedly shot a coworker during an argument. Kale Daniel Lawrence, about 21, is charged with first degree assault - serious physical injury, armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon.

‘Once upon a time, a teenage daughter wanted a horse…’. That was the beginning of Jeffrey and Tammy Miller’s farm story. In 2017, the Millers purchased acreage in suburban Nixa, located in newly Agri-Ready Designated Christian County. HHH Ranch (Happy Highland Homestead) is located ‘a stones throw’ from Nixa High School and the Miller family enjoys sharing their Highland cattle and agriculture’s story in their community. At the third Annual Nixa Men's Varsity Volleyball Tournament on April 11, the Eagles captured their first tournament championship in program history, a milestone moment for a team that began competing in 2024. In the title match, Nixa defeated Lutheran St. Charles High School 25-22, 17-25, 25-22, avenging a pool play loss from earlier in the day and showing tremendous resilience when it mattered most.

The Nixa and Ozark Police Departments will join law enforcement in Springfield, Hollister and Indian Point in adopting the Blue Envelope Program, an initiative designed to create safer interactions between police officers and people with special needs. It was announced that the departments would begin using the program during a press conference held in cooperation with Arc of the Ozark, Abilities First, and Burrell Behavioral Health at the Greene County Public Safety Center on Monday, April 20.

The Christian County Sheriff’s Office, in partnership with OTC and the Missouri Sheriff’s Association, is offering a new 700-hour Basic Peace Officer Law Enforcement Academy, to be taught in Ozark. The academy will begin instruction on Monday, Aug. 3. When instruction ends on Thursday, Dec. 17, those who have successfully completed the training will have earned a Class A Peace Officer License with the State of Missouri.

Fallen Christian County Deputy Sheriffs Gabriel Ramirez and Michael Hislope were memorialized in an Arbor Day celebration at McCauley Park in Nixa on Friday, April 24. Two bur oak trees were planted in the southeast corner of the park. Two markers were placed in front of the trees, each with the name of one of the deputies and their date of their end of watch.

Several weeks ago, I attended the opening of the new Christian County Museum and Historical Society located in the old rock building on the square in Ozark. Paul Johns and many others have done a wonderful job in preserving the history of the county where some of us grew up, and others now call home.
